Unexpected Talents

February 1, 2009

Everyone has a few things that they are just a little better at than the average bear. None of these particular talents are Olympic worthy, but I am (not-so-secretly) a little proud of them.

  • Roman Numerals –   My dad and hours of drills can take credit for this.
  • Geometry – particularly on the 8th grade level. I was always awful at math, but I am a Geometry prodigy. I can do those proofs as if I was born to them!
  • Air Hockey – I can’t play more than a few games at a time, because the pressure of maintaining my winning streak causes anxiety and my back to freak out. I take it that seriously.
  • Reading Illegible Handwriting
  • Finding Spelling Errors - Okay, don’t go being a jerk and find all my typos. I am just saying that if someone else makes a spelling error, I find it. They just kind of pop out at me.
  • Keeping Cool in Traffic – I am no angel, it’s just that I kind of consider traffic a fact of life in NYC, and sitting in traffic doesn’t induce any crazy road rage for me.
  • Wine Picker – I generally can’t tell Cabernet from a Merlot, nor can I detect any subtle notes of chocolate, but if you set me loose in a wine store and give me a budget, I have a knack for picking a wine that everyone really likes. My method is based totally on the label, but I will not divulge any further secrets.
  • Direction – This is different from reading directions or maps (a failure), but I have an uncanny sense of direction. I just kind of know what direction we should be heading in, or how to get home. It’s not always the quickest or most efficient way, and there have been some epic displays of how very, very wrong I can be, but generally – I get the job done. Famous phrase? “I feel like it’s this way.”
  • Finding Stuff on the Floor – I thank archaeology for this. Drop an earring on a casino floor? Lose a contact in the middle of the forest? I am your girl. And yet, I can’t find the milk on the side door of the fridge, or the jeans in the closet.

OMG you are great. Awesome list. I mean, I am especially envious of the roman numerals thing. I am often called Billy, as in from the Family Circus, with regards to my ways of getting from point a to point b. I’ll get there, but it might not be the most logical way to go!

This is hilarious because just today I wrote a post on things that I’m BAD at! You’ve inspired me to write one like this next.

And I am basically the exact opposite– most of your strengths are my weaknesses. We need to combine our powers!

This is fantastic! I lost the back of my earring three days ago in the kitchen and STILL can’t find it. Want to come over?!
